Campbell Named Leadership Health Care Volunteer of the Year
The Nashville Health Care Council's Leadership Health Care (LHC) program named Kevin Campbell the recipient of its 2008 Leadership Health Care Volunteer of the Year Award. The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a member of LHC for outstanding service to the organization and for support of the group's overall mission to foster the next generation of health care leaders. Campbell, chairman of the Health Care Section at Nashville law firm Boult Cummings Conners & Berry, has been instrumental in the development and growth of LHC since the group's beginnings in 2002. He is a member of the organization's board of directors and chairs the LHC Education & Events Committee. During Campbell's involvement with LHC, the group has grown to a membership of more than 500, offering unique programs and signature events specially-designed for emerging industry leaders.
Vanderbilt Offering Post-Secondary Education Program for Students with Intellectual Disabilities
The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VKC UCEDD) is receiving a three-year grant from the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities to develop and coordinate a college program for students with intellectual disabilities.
Vanderbilt will accept its first students in January 2010, after an initial planning year. Working with University, Medical Center, and community disability organizations, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center faculty, staff, and trainees will develop a daytime program that lasts for two years per student.
Timing is Everything When it Comes to Childhood Asthma
Children who are born four months before the peak of cold and flu season have a greater risk of developing childhood asthma than children born at any other time of year, according to new research from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which was published last month in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
, a publication of the American Thoracic Society.
In the Tennessee Asthma Bronchiolitis Study (TABS), researchers found that the timing of when a child is born in relationship to the annual cold and flu season alters the risk for developing asthma. Autumn-born babies, who are about 4 months of age when the winter virus season peaks, have a nearly 30 percent increased risk of developing asthma compared with births during other times of the year, and this risk was similar to or greater than other well-established risk factors for asthma.
Meharry Takes Child Safety Message to a National Audience
Educators and researchers from Meharry Medical College are traveling to Washington, DC in February, capping off a six-city study of child passenger safety (CPS) that included Miami in November and San Diego in December.
The Ford See Me Safe
program, made possible by a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund, is a unique approach to child passenger safety that involves both families and healthcare professionals. Meharry researchers are attempting to measure the knowledge of the healthcare community about this important public health issue and believe they've found a key to increasing usage of car and booster seats.
See Me Safe has three components. First, a community partnership lays the foundation for working with families and healthcare providers. Then a component designed for parents uses one-on-one instruction and personal interaction to teach the elements of child passenger safety. Prescription for Safety, designed for healthcare providers, is a Continuing Medical Education session that covers the technical aspects of child passenger restraint systems.
State Receives Grant for Youth Suicide Prevention
The United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Acting Administrator Dr. Eric Broderick presented a "big check" to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Commissioner Virginia Trotter Betts to the tune of $1.5 million. The check will fund a three-year grant benefiting the Tennessee Lives Count project that will continue to provide youth suicide prevention initiatives throughout the state.
Veteran Local Healthcare Exec Launches Consulting Firm
In late November, Tom McElroy announced the founding of Thomas McElroy Consulting, which specializes in increasing the effectiveness of boards of directors of healthcare organizations through a number of services including retreats, orientations, self-assessments and action plans to create high-functioning boards of directors.
McElroy, who has more than 25 years of industry experience, also consults on network development, marketing and business development. He was responsible for the start-up of Tennessee Healthcare –– a statewide network owned by four leading hospitals in the eastern and western regions of the state –– and served as the organization's president for 13 years.
Lifepoint Names Coggin Chief Accounting Officer
Brentwood-based LifePoint Hospitals, Inc. (NASDAQ: LPNT) recently announced the addition of Michael S. Coggin as Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer. Reporting to the Company's Chief Financial Officer, Coggin will oversee the activities of the corporate accounting department and the dissemination of financial management reports, including financial statements, annual audits and annual budgets. Prior to joining LifePoint, Coggin served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Specialty Care Services Group, a multiple service line healthcare company located in Nashville.
Cardiologist Thompson Joins Saint Thomas Heart at WMC
Interventional cardiologist Thomas Thompson, MD, has recently joined Saint Thomas Heart at Williamson Medical Center and will practice on campus in the Williamson Tower. Thompson comes to STH after practicing with Cardiovascular Associates in Jackson, Miss., for the past 20 years. He earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine (UMSM) and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at UMSM.
Nabors Joins Sterling Primary Care at Centennial
Cheryl Nabors, MD, has joined Sterling Primary Care at Centennial Medical Center. Nabors is specially trained in internal medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Her office is located on Patterson Street.
HCA Appoints Stinnett Senior Vice President and Controller
Effective December 1, officials with HCA announced Donald W. Stinnett, CPA, would become senior vice president and controller. Stinnett, who has been with the company since 1999, had been serving as CFO of HCA's Eastern Group. In his new role, he will report to R. Milton Johnson, HCA's executive vice president and CFO.
HealthSpring, Inc. Announces Retirement of CFO Kevin McNamara
In late November, HealthSpring, Inc. (NYSE:HS) announced Kevin M. McNamara, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, will retire effective May 31, 2009. Until his retirement, Mr. McNamara will help manage the process for selecting his successor and ensuring a smooth transition, among his other normal duties as the company's principal financial and accounting officer.
HealthSpring will engage a national search firm to recruit candidates for the CFO position.
Medical Equipment Specialist Joins HFR as a Consultant
Beverly Reagan, an executive diagnostic imaging equipment consultant and medical equipment planner, has contracted with Hart Freeland Roberts (HFR) architects and engineers as a consultant in HFR's Healthcare Planning Department and will be based at the firm's headquarters in Brentwood.
Reagan comes to HFR with a background in executive consultative business development, medical equipment planning of major and minor medical facilities, educational consulting, plus nursing experience and coursework. Her education includes a bachelor's degree in radiology education and health administration. She is a 1991 graduate of Medical University of South Carolina - Charleston.
PivotHealth Names Palmer Senior Consultant, Bedwell Financial Analyst
Nashville-based PivotHealth, a physician practice management company, announced the addition of Penny Palmer, MD as one of the company's senior consultants last month. In this role, Palmer will be focusing on projects that include the implementation of an Electronic Medical Record system. Additionally, she will be concentrating on the advantages to medical practices and physicians incurred by effective coding practices.
Also last month, the company announced the addition of Joe Bedwell as a financial analyst. In this role, Bedwell will be responsible for collecting, researching and analyzing data pertaining to physician operations and positioning physician practices for operational improvement and revenue growth. He will also be responsible for enhancing the business development effort and strengthening the overall practice management team.
Nephrology Associates Expands Dickson Office, Welcomes New Physician
As the need for renal care has grown, Nephrology Associates, a provider of personalized renal care in Middle Tennessee, has expanded its Dickson practice with the addition of a third kidney disease specialist, Douglas Linfert, MD.
Linfert received his training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and the Dallas VA Medical Center. Additionally, he has authored articles in several peer-reviewed publications and contributed to kidney research projects with the National Kidney Foundation. He holds degrees from Saint Louis University School of Medicine (MD), University of Connecticut (post baccalaureate) and Vanderbilt University (BA).
New Four-Year Medical School Announced in East Tennessee
A physician shortage across the region that is predicted to reach a critical state has been cited as the impetus for King College in Bristol, Tenn. to pursue the development of a four-year medical school and the addition of a doctor of medicine degree to its medical education program. The college already offers a strong pre-med curriculum.
The national physician shortage is estimated to be as high as 200,000 by the year 2020. The Association of American Medical Schools (AAMC) projects a 27 percent decline in the number of physicians per 100,000 of the U.S. population between 2000 and 2030.
To combat the shortage, the AAMC has called for a 30 percent increase in U.S. medical school enrollment by 2015. A survey of existing medical schools has led to the belief that current programs can only absorb about half the recommended additional enrollment therefore requiring the creation of new programs to train more medical students.
King College is in the process of establishing a five-state regional commission to address physician shortage solutions with healthcare providers, medical schools, legislators and others from across the area. Building on the success of the college's current pre-med program and the combined efforts of the three key supporters – education, healthcare and local communities – officials believe that the new medical school could welcome its first students in the year 2012.
MTMC Surgeons Debut Robotic Surgery Procedure in Rutherford County
Recently, surgeons at Middle Tennessee Medical Center performed the first robotic surgery procedure with the da Vinci Surgical System in Rutherford County. Patrick R. Showalter, MD, and Chad M. Jackson, MD, of Middle Tennessee Urology Specialists have used the da Vinci to perform prostatectomies, which are the most common procedure undertaken with the robotic device.
The da Vinci Surgical System was purchased in September 2008 through a $1.75 million grant from the Christy Houston Foundation.

PharmMD Expands Advisory Board
Medication therapy management provider PharmMD recently added three accomplished professionals to its advisory board. New members of the PharmMD advisory board include Martin Makary, MD; Michael Burcham; and Kevin Hutchinson. Makary is an active surgeon at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and professor for the university's Bloomberg School of Public Health. Burcham most recently served as president of ParadigmHealth, a specialty care and disease management provider that integrates services for health plan and employer clients. Hutchinson is president and CEO of Prematics, developer of the nation's first fully managed electronic medication prescribing solution.
Healthways Expands Global Presence
Healthways International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Healthways, Inc. (NASDAQ: HWAY), announced last month a five-year agreement to offer comprehensive Health and Care SupportSM solutions to The Hospitals Contribution Fund of Australia Limited (HCF), one of the largest private health insurers in Australia with more than 1 million members. Cogent Adds Five New Hospital Partners
Brentwood-based Cogent Healthcare recently announced the addition of five new hospital partnerships in the fourth quarter of 2008. Cogent's new hospital medicine agreements range from full-service contracts to management engagements to consulting.
Nash Lipsey Burch and Mazzetti & Associates Merge
San Francisco-based consulting and engineering firm Mazzetti & Associates and Nashville-based Nash Lipsey Burch (NLB) announced in late November that the two firms have merged. The combined company will be known as Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch until a new name is announced.
Sign of the Times: Portland Medical Center Closes
Citing declining inpatient volumes, Portland Medical Center ceased operations at the end of 2008. The TriStar facility, however, is slated to continue outpatient diagnostic and occupational medicine services.
In the fall of 2006, Portland Medical Center (PMC) began operating as an affiliate of Hendersonville Medical Center. Since that time, hospital leaders have evaluated utilization rates and referral patterns. Portland CEO Regina Bartlett, RN, said over time the Portland hospital has become predominantly an outpatient facility.
The medical office building located on the Portland Medical Center campus will continue to operate and provide patient access to physicians. Primary care physicians and specialists who hold clinic at Portland will still be available to see patients.
Federal Grant to Support New Imaging Center
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded a $7.5 million grant to the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center to establish a new imaging program.
The five-year grant will support the Vanderbilt In Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Center (ICMIC), which will provide enhanced scientific and technical resources to develop innovative molecular imaging studies of cancer biology and to advance translational imaging research in cancer care. A special focus of the program will be to develop innovative imaging biomarkers that can be used to predict and measure whether patients respond to specific treatments.
Led by John Gore, PhD, director of the Institute of Imaging Science and principal investigator for the new grant, the ICMIC will create several specialized resources, including an expanded small animal imaging core, a chemistry core, a radiochemistry core and a biostatistics core. The research will focus on the development and application of sensitive new imaging probes and allow researchers to assess how specific in vivo molecular signal transduction pathways –– and physiologic changes caused by changes in these pathways –– are modified by cancer and cancer therapy.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been accredited with the CEO Gold Standard™ certification, recognizing VUMC's commitment to the health of employees and family members by certifying its efforts to meet an exceptionally high standard of cancer prevention, screening and care guidelines. The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center took the lead in seeking accreditation as an indication of its dedication to reducing the burden of cancer for its own staff and colleagues. "We are committed to providing strategies for cancer prevention and treatment for our own employees and colleagues," said Jennifer Pietenpol, PhD, director of Vanderbilt-Ingram. "Our mission -- to alleviate death and suffering from cancer — starts at home, here on the Vanderbilt campus."
In other news from VUMC, the Vanderbilt Breast Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The three-year term of accreditation is for mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
Cool Springs Surgery Center has received the highest level of accreditation available from both of the nation's leading accreditation agencies; The Joint Commission (JCAHO) and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Cool Springs Surgery Center is the only local outpatient surgery center to be granted this dual accreditation.
In mid-December, Saint Thomas Hospital became the first hospital in the state of Tennessee to achieve accreditation as a Heart Failure Institute by the Healthcare Accreditation Colloquium. "Saint Thomas Heart remains at the forefront of cardiovascular care," said Douglas J. Pearce, MD, medical director of the Advanced Heart Failure Program. "We take a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to the management of this complex disease." Saint Thomas exceeded all requirements for accreditation, which included an analysis of current practices, submitting a comprehensive report, in-depth interviews, and an on-site visit from surveyors.
Bass, Berry & Sims partner Leigh Walton has been named co-chair of the Transactions Affinity Group of the American Health Lawyers Association Business Law and Governance Practice Group, which focuses on the corporate side of healthcare practice. Walton co-chairs Bass, Berry & Sims' Healthcare Practice and is also active in corporate and securities law matters.
The American College of Healthcare Executives recently recognized local healthcare leaders by honoring them with an ACHE Service Award. The award is given through the ACHE Recognition Program, which celebrates commitment to the healthcare management profession. Awards are based on execution of specific volunteer activities that demonstrate leadership and contributions to furthering professional excellence. Those honored included: Williamson Medical Center CEO Dennis Miller; HCA Chairman Jack O. Bovender Jr.; American Hospital Association Regional Executive W. Thomas Deweese; Tennessee Hospital Association Senior Vice President James L. Goodloe; and Lipscomb University Associate Provost Pattie Elaine Griffin.
Another member of the Williamson Medical Center leadership team was also recently honored. Gail Inman Hazelwood recently earned the prestigious Certified Healthcare Administrative Professional designation, given by the Association of Healthcare Administrative Professionals. AHCAP is part of the American Hospital Association and is the largest society dedicated to healthcare executive assistants. In addition to earning the cHAP designation, Hazelwood, who serves as assistant to WMC CFO Don Webb, deserves recognition for spearheading the establishment of the certification during her role as president of AHCAP from 2006-2007.
Earning the 31st and 55th national spots, Volunteer State Health Plan (VSHP) was recently featured in U.S. News and World Report/NCQA America's Best Health Plan 2008-09 rankings for Medicaid plans. VSHP's BlueCare plan, which serves TennCare enrollees, ranked 31st nationally out of 80 plans with a score of 83.2 (out of 100) points, placing it first in the state for Medicaid plans. VSHP's TennCareSelect plan scored 78.1 points and came in at 55th on the list.
