On the heels of the commencement of its 2018 class, Nashville Health Care Council Fellows has published its first white paper, 2018 Year in Review, sharing key insights from the initiative's most recent discussions. The publication provides a snapshot of what proved to be top-of-mind for this year's Fellows and faculty, collectively one of the nation's most influential cohorts of health care leaders.

The highlights were gathered from 64 intensive hours of classroom collaboration aimed to shape the future of health care. This year, 31 Fellows had the exclusive opportunity to candidly discuss strategies to solve the most pressing issues of this increasingly complex industry.

Co-chaired by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., and Larry Van Horn, health care management and economics professor at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, Council Fellows provides an opportunity for top health care leaders to engage in vulnerable dialogue, share unique perspectives and enhance the skills needed to carry the industry forward.

"The 2018 Year in Review advances the Council Fellows' commitment to facilitating conversations about the challenges and the opportunities facing health care leaders throughout this country," Frist said. "We're proud to share these takeaways from our most recent class, in hopes of continuing the important discussions relevant to our field during this time of transformation and innovation."

The white paper includes unique perspectives by the 2018 Fellows class in response to faculty presentations, which include:

  • Driving health care change outside of Washington, D.C.
  • Addressing the nation's opioid crisis
  • Social constraints affecting health care
  • How physicians can maximize care effectiveness

"As the Council Fellows program has grown, it's become increasingly evident that the collaboration that occurs when we bring the best health care minds together is impactful, not only within the classroom, but also across the nation," said June Patterson, director of the Council Fellows. "Given this nationally unique platform, we recognize the responsibility that falls on us to continue to break down siloes and bring every diverse sector of health care together at the table. And there's nowhere better for that table than here in Nashville."
