Dean Wilkerson, the Executive Director of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) for over 15 years, announced today he plans to retire in 2020.
"I'm grateful to have the opportunity to work with so many talented emergency physicians and dedicated staff to make progress in ACEP's mission. Together, we have transformed the organization over the years and made a profound difference in the lives of millions of Americans seeking emergency care."
ACEP has experienced dramatic growth in almost every area of its operations during Mr. Wilkerson's tenure, including membership, legislative and regulatory advocacy, internal and external communications, clinical resources, meeting attendance, budget, staff, PAC giving, and increased donations and creation of an endowment for its affiliated research foundation.
"ACEP is a terrific organization and I am very proud of all that we've accomplished. But I discussed with ACEP's Board of Directors several years ago that I intend to retire on July 31, 2020, when my current employment agreement ends."
ACEP's President Vidor Friedman, MD, FACEP, said, "Dean has done a great job for us for many years. ACEP's Board appreciates the lead time he has given us. We will do a thorough nationwide search to find his successor who will have some big shoes to fill."

"It is the right time to let someone else come in as the chief staff executive and guide the future of ACEP. My successor will inherit a strong organization."
A search committee has been appointed and Association Strategies (associationstrategies.com) will conduct a nationwide search. A position description will be available by mid-October.
