Joseph C. Schaffer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and other disorders of the shoulder, knee, hip, and elbow, has joined Hughston Clinic Orthopedics after completing subspecialty fellowship training in sports medicine.

A Virginia native, Schaffer received dual undergraduate degrees from Virginia Tech. Prior to entering medicine, he worked as a naval architect for the U.S. Department of the Navy. Discovering medicine as his calling, Schaffer went on to earn his medical degree from The University of Virginia, where he was admitted to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed both his orthopedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship at Rochester Medical Center in New York where he provided care to both collegiate and pro athletes including the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and the U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit.
