A seventh-generation Tennessean, Lamar Alexander served the state as governor before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002. The Republican leader chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and has worked on a number of bipartisan bills to make healthcare more efficient, effective and affordable. He helped write and has been a vocal support of the comprehensive 21st Century Cures Act, which includes significant research funding, mental health reforms, expedited review for medical devices, health IT improvements, and state funding to fight opioid abuse. Outside of his elected positions, Alexander previously served as president of the University of Tennessee and as U.S. Secretary of Education under President George H.W. Bush.
