A Vanderbilt School of Medicine graduate, Balser joined his alma mater as an associate dean in 1998 and was named chair of VUMC's Department of Anesthesiology three years later. In 2004, he became the chief research officer, leading expansion that moved Vanderbilt into the top 10 in NIH funding. In October 2008, Balser became the 11th dean of the School of Medicine since its founding in 1875 and was named associate vice chancellor for Health Affairs. Eight months later, he took the role of vice chancellor upon the retirement of Harry Jacobson, MD, who selected Balser as his successor. In 2016, as VUMC separated legally and financially from Vanderbilt University, Balser assumed the role of president and CEO while continuing to serve as dean for the medical school. He sits on the board of the Center for Medical Interoperability.
