In his roles with Sarah Cannon, HCA's global cancer institute, Burris leads clinical strategy and drug development, which includes overseeing physician-led, patient-centric integrated cancer services. In 1997, Burris established the first community-based phase I drug development program in Nashville, which became Sarah Cannon Research Institute. Burris has led first-in-human studies for many now-approved drugs that have changed the standard of care and was named a 'Giant of Cancer Care' at the 2014 American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting.
