Learning Objectives

After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to describe and discuss:

1. Criteria for referring patients for interventional stroke treatment

2. Secondary stroke prevention strategies and be able to implement them

3. Approaches to using tele-neurology to manage stroke patients

Statement of Educational Need

Strategies for acute stroke management have changed considerably in the past two years, including two new devices for removing clots, both of which have shown superior efficacy to earlier devices. There were 5 new studies on interventional management of stroke in 2015. Other areas of new development include new anti-coagulation drugs and usefulness of cardiac monitoring. New evidence has emerged regarding anti-platelet therapy of stroke and levels of blood pressure control. Finally, new rehabilitation techniques and devices are emerging. Physicians do not always have information about these new developments and guidance on how to incorporate them into their practices in order to provide the best care for their patients.
