TriStar Centennial Medical Center is hosting a series of recognizing domestic violence seminars on Monday, March 27.

In the United States, 37% of all women who sought care in an ER for violence- related injuries were hurt by a current or former spouse, boyfriend and girlfriend. [a]

In Tennessee, one in three women will be a victim of domestic or sexual violence in their lifetime. [b]

TriStar Centennial is committed to educating the community in addition to area physicians and healthcare personnel on playing a critical role in identifying victims of abuse and providing resources they need to get help.

Bill Smock, MD, internationally recognized forensic physician and police surgeon, will present causes, symptoms and treatment of both physical and psychological abuse.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to be the first hospital in HCA to launch an intimate partner violence (IPV) awareness program focusing on medical education and most importantly, doing what is right for our patients," said Cynthia Stroburg, chief nursing officer. "Because victims of abuse often interact with the healthcare system, TriStar Centennial is in a unique position for our caregivers to take a stand against domestic violence by identifying victims and assisting with appropriate follow-up care."

The grand rounds will be held on Monday, March 27 from 8 AM - 3:30 PM and will be held in the 3 Tower Classroom on the third floor when entering the main hospital.
