Conway-Welch has been active in nursing practice and education for more than 40 years. She served as professor and dean of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing for 29 years until retiring in 2013. On the national stage, she served on governmental committees regarding public health preparedness, emergency preparedness, homeland security and Medicare coverage. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science and a past Nashville Medical News "Women to Watch" honoree. In 2016, she was inducted into the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame and named a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing.
