For five decades, Cook has focused his energy on life sciences and biopharmaceuticals. He started his career at Eli Lilly and had risen to group vice president, Global Operations, by the time he retired in 1993. Cook came out of retirement to lead Amylin Pharmaceuticals as CEO from 1998-2003 and chairman from 1998-2009. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Cook returned to the Southeast and founded Mountain Group Partners, which is focused on investing in and actively guiding companies in the life sciences and technology sectors. A past board chair for Life Science Tennessee, Cook currently serves as executive chair for NuSirt Biopharma and on the boards of several other biotech companies.
