Renowned physician-scientist Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, director of the Center for Cancer Targeted Therapies, director of the Breast Cancer Research Program and associate director for Clinical Research at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), has been named director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and associate dean of Oncology Programs at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Arteaga has been a member of the Vanderbilt faculty since 1989 and has led the Vanderbilt SPORE in Breast Cancer since 2001
"Carlos Arteaga is one of the most admired and respected breast cancer investigators in the world. He has made some of the seminal discoveries in breast cancer and translated these research findings to the clinic for the benefit of patients," said Jennifer Pietenpol, PhD, director of VICC and EVP for Research at VUMC.
Arteaga said the decision to take the new leadership position after 28 years at Vanderbilt was extremely hard. "I will always hold enormous gratitude and admiration for Vanderbilt and all it has done for my career," Arteaga said.
