March 24 - The Tennessee Department of Health released updated numbers at 2 pm today with 667 confirmed cases of COVID-19 statewide. TDH reports 183 cases in Davidson County, which is actually 1 less than Nashville reported yesterday but 19 more than the state's numbers for Nashville on Monday. TDH officials said "improvements in our tracking process has changed figures for some counties so their numbers are lower" than previously stated. However, TDH also noted, "the labs notify local jurisdictions first, so public health and providers can follow up with those patients." Therefore, state numbers may lag behind local information.
By local counts from the Metro Public Health Department, Davidson County has 253 cases with 1 death, 29 patients who have recovered and 223 active cases. These figures represent 69 new cases confirmed today. In Tuesday's press conference with Governor Bill Lee, he also referenced higher numbers than TDH, citing 773 case statewide.
The governor called on Tennesseans to take personal responsibility to stop the spread of the virus by following social distancing and hand-washing guidance. He added the state expects numbers of cases and deaths to continue to rise and called on schools to remain closed through April 24. Additionally, the governor said he has mobilized 250 National Guard members to assist in testing for COVID-19 in rural areas. Yesterday, he signed an executive order to ban elective surgeries at hospitals, surgery centers and dental offices. He also created a unified command to coordinate response to COVID-19.
