UTHSC Hosts Webinar on Impact of COVID-19 on Telemedicine

April 8, 2020 - The University of Tennessee Health Science Center will host a panel of experts Tuesday, April 14, for a webinar on Telemedicine in the time of COVID-19.

The webinar, from 11 a.m. to noon, is being put on by the Department of Diagnostic and Health Sciences in the UTHSC College of Health Professions. It is open to the UTHSC community, health care providers, and the public.

"All aspects of society are going through rapid changes during the COVID-19 outbreak," said Hassan Aziz, PhD, FACSs, MLS(ASCP)cm, associate dean for Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs in the College of Health Professions, and interim chair of the Department of Diagnostic and Health Sciences. "The national call to 'Flatten the Curve' by social distancing underscores the need to increase utilization of the telemedicine services."

Topics and speakers include:

  • COVID-19-related regulations impacting telemedicine practice: Sajeesh Kumar, PhD, associate professor of Health Informatics & Information Management:
  • Documentation requirements for telemedicine services: Rebecca Reynolds, EdD, RHIA, CHPS, FAHIMA, professor and program director of Health Informatics & Information Management
  • Practicing telemedicine in COVID-19 times: Tammy Danford, MSN, RN, CGRN, nurse manager for Telehealth at the Memphis VA Medical Center

"Attendees will learn about the recent COVID-19-related regulations impacting telemedicine practice and the documentation requirements and coding guidelines necessary to comply with new telemedicine rules," Dr. Aziz said. "The webinar will cover aspects of practicing telemedicine, such as contingency plans, HIPAA compliance, and equipment. There will be a question and answer session at the conclusion of the webinar.
