What a difference a weekend makes. New numbers are in ... and they aren't great. Between Memorial Day and massive protest rallies, local and state health officials are keeping a watchful eye on community spread over the coming days.
Metro Nashville
On Friday morning, Nashville had reported 5,147 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Today, the new number is 5,517 ... and increase of 370 over the weekend and 132 in the last 24 hours. Deaths have risen from 58 on Friday to 63 today. On the plus side, active cases only jumped by 137 over the weekend as more people have now recovered. Currently, there are 1,289 active cases and 4,165 Nashvillians who have recovered (up 228 since Friday). There have been 58,604 tests administered in Davidson County with a positive rate of 9.4% (up from 9.2% on Friday).
All of the city's key metrics are in the green today. The percentage of ICU bed availability had dipped to 22% on Friday, pushing that metric to yellow, but it has rebounded to green as of today.
Health officials reminded everyone of the importance of continuing to wash hands regularly, maintain social distancing, wear masks in public and stay home when possible in order to maintain the green status of key metrics that will allow reopening of the economy to continue. The mayor has repeatedly said the city would reverse course on the staged reopening plan if the key metrics warranted such a move.
There was no discernible social distancing over the weekend as thousands flocked downtown on Saturday afternoon for a peaceful protest and rally over racial inequality ... followed by rioting by a significantly smaller number in the evening ... spurred by the brutal death of George Floyd. Public health officials will anxiously monitor case counts over the coming few weeks. Drawing a largely younger crowd, the danger of initial spread from the protest is anticipated to be followed by the possibility of secondary spread as asymptomatic attendees come into contact with others in the community.
Tennessee State
The state saw a significant jump in cases over the weekend. On Friday afternoon, the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed 21,679 cases of COVID-19. Today, that number has risen to 23,554 - an increase of nearly 2,000 over 72 hours ... with 548 cases being confirmed in the last 24 hours. There are 1,767 hospitalizations across Tennessee (up 17 in 24 hours) and 15,564 recovered (an increase of 264 in 24 hours). A total of 448,000 Tennesseans have been tested for COVID-19.
