On Monday, Oct. 12, Meharry Medical College celebrated its 140th annual convocation to welcome a new academic year for future physicians, dentists, researchers and health policy experts.

Presided over by James E.K. Hildreth, PhD, MD, who was named Meharry’s 12th president and CEO in July, the event also featured Mayor Megan Barry as keynote speaker. During the convocation, four students were surprised with the Presidential Student Leadership Scholarship that will cover tuition costs for their final year of attendance at Meharry. The scholarships are funded by the U. S. Department of Education’s Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI) Part B programs. This is the second year Meharry has awarded students with this scholarship.

In addition, Meharry also honored three alumni. James F. Densler, MD, FACS, FAAP, was presented with the Axel C. Hansen, MD ’44 Distinguished Physician Award. Ruth E. Ross, DDS, MDS, was presented with the Fred C. Fielder Distinguished Dentist Award, and Jabbar R. Bennett, PhD, received the Harold D. West Distinguished Biomedical Scientist Award.
